22 Ways Christians Think Differently (on life) - No. 9 (Essence vs. Appearance)

To Christians the universe and everything in it is the spiritual dressed up with that which is material. Essence of the universe is spiritual not material.

Jesus explained this concept saying, "The Spirit gives life; flesh counts for nothing." John 6:63

More directly, Jesus said, "God is Spirit." John 4:24 Inasmuch as all that are physical came from God, who is the Spirit, that which is physical is a mere reflection of that which is essential, that is, the spiritual. For this reason Jesus said, "Stop judging by mere appearances." For the same reason the Apostle Paul says of Jesus, "Being found in appearance as a man..." Phi 2:8

The understanding of the essential nature of the universe is the key to finding the meaning purpose and value of all creations.

In regarding the meaning and purpose of existence, King David says, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hand." Psalm 19:1 Speaking of the same truth, the Apostle Paul says, "So ... whatever you do, do it for the glory of God." 1Co 10:31

In regard to the value of every existence, Rabbi Dessler writes, "Everything has value only in relation to its spiritual content. The whole physical environment exists as an environment to the spiritual life of the human being; this is its spiritual content." (The Inner Meaning of the Creation)
