Uganda Conf.

From LA to Uganda

I left LA Tuesday at 5:00 a.m. on July 31, 2012 and arrived at the Entebe Airport of Uganda around noon time of Thursday on August 2, 2012. It took total 55 hours to get to Africa.

At the airport, Missionary Joseph and Shepherd Zaccaeus greeted me. Soon other team members such as Shepherd John Kim of Inje UBF, Dr. Ulrike of Germany, Missionary Jacky Yoon from Kenya, and Sarah Kim Jr. of Chicago two brothers from Egypt named Mandou and Ayman joined the company. By bus we arrived at the conference site. Also joined the two brothers from Egypt.

Shepherd John Kim of Inje UBF, S. Korea brought a huge card board box the size of about 4 by 4 by 4 feet. I asked him what is in it. He said "all the auto parts." "What auto parts?" I asked. He said Dr. Luke Lim of Uganda still drives a Korean Car (made by Ssangyong, 1997 model). The parts are not available in Uganda. So he called Inje UBF and asked Shepherd John to bring spare parts for his car.

News on Bethesda Clinic:

This is the result of my fellowship with Dr. John Jun and Msn Paul Chung, for I had a breakfast with Dr. John Jun and other coworkers (Dr. Peter Chang, Msn. Paul Chung, Sh. John Kim of Inje UBF, Msn. Wesley Yoon of New York, the architect.) I shared a room with Msn. Paul Chung.

Thus far, Dr. John Jun worked to raise fund for the construction, totaling about $100,000. ($40k from Kwangjoo UBF 3; $40k from Chicago UBF, and $20k the amount reserved by Uganda UBF for bethesda clinic. The raw materials remained stranded at the custom authority in Uganda. It was worth about $400k. The custom office demanded $200k. But they soon learned that it is of no use for them to retain it indefinitely. So
they decided to release them for $15k.

Dr. John Jun sent Paul Chung who is experienced in construction work to Uganda a month ago. He worked with coworkers of Uganda UBF (Luke Lim and Msn. David a chinese). They hired local workers based on hourly rate (menial worker for $4/h, skilled worker $8/h, and foreman - for $12/h). They ordered the raw materials (cement, gravel, and sand, as well as bricks and cinder blocks) locally. Nowadays if they ordered materials the local vendors deliver them on to the site. They also decided to serve lunch for the workers, so they hired a cook paying hourly rate. The workers liked the lunch service. In less than a month, the Bethesda Clinic now came to have all the walls erected, from the basement up to the first and second floor. Dr. John Jun projects that they are in deed of about $150k more to complete the project.

Thank God for blessing the NE African Regional Bible Conference by sending people from Sudan, Kenya, Tanzanea, Egypt, USA, Germany, Korea and Uganda. The conference site (Kampala, Uganda Lweza Training Conference Center can hold at the main hall 150 maximum. Kenya brought 50 people, and Sudan brought 35. So the host country Uganda had to limit the number of students to attend the conference. As of July 2011 South Sudan became an independent nation. In anticipation of the division coming Missionary Andrew started building up the S. Sudan ministry. Presently Dr. Oyo Moses works as the director of the S. Sudan at Malakal. Lately S. Sudan UBF sent out Shepherd Padet Deng to Juba, the capital city of S. Sudan. S. Sudan coworkers prayed together and brought students to the conference. In order to travel to Uganda they had to fly from Malakal to Juba. From there they took a bus, crossed the border and came to Uganda. It cost them $10k for travel expenses.

The conference started out on Friday beginning at 8:03 a.m. at a site called Kampala, Uganda Lweza Training Conference Center. The eleven coworkers from Chicago area (Dr. Abraham Kim, Sarah Kim, Pastor Ron, Dr. Jim Rabchuck, etc.) got stranded at Rwanda airport the previous night, for the airplane run by KLM broke down beyond repair. As I prayed for their safe arrival, I realized that the Lord helped them to spend time for a while at the Rwanda airport so they could pray for the Africa especially Rwanda. So the Lord granted us not three but four regional conferences.

Morning Program

Opening Message: "A Lord's Servant"
Presider: Kenneth Kyamanywa

Representative Prayer: Allan Komakechi (Makerere)

Messenger by: Dr. Joseph Chung

Isaiah 49:1-7

He began the message by singing Ugandan National Anthem. He likes the anthem for it has faith, hope, and decision. He came to Uganda in December 2009. His wife Esther chose to come to Uganda after tasting the sweetness of the Uganda sweet potato. He confessed that while his wife was diligent in preparing the study notes and writing Bible testimonies he himself worked on old study materials so he became a habitual servant. He kept watching TV and got himself interested in interesting political stories. So he became a dull servant. He prayed that we need to encourage one another to write a deep Bible testimony, show due respect for God's word, so we could grow as servants like a sharpened sword or a polished arrow.

The call to be a light for the Gentiles is historical. A senior citizen Simeon quoted Isaiah 49:6 as he held in his bosom baby Jesus. The Apostle Paul shared the same vision. He made much of the ministry among the Gentiles. Now is the time for Africa to send missionaries to other nations. S. Korea used to be a permanent recipient of foreign aid. But through Dr. Samuel Lee's influence Korea became a giving country sending out missionaries to over 90 different nations. Our Lord loves world mission, and blesses any nation who obeys the Lord's world mission. We believe the God of Africa shall change Africa to be the light to the Gentiles. One word: a Lord's servant is a Bible teacher, a missionary, and a prayer servant.

Before the main lecture we got ourselves divided into 14 groups and had a bible study. My group leader was Dr. Abraham. Dr. Samuel Yoo fished him on campus in 1997. Since then he went through many rejections because of Jesus. How he works as the physician at the Ugandan National Institute of Cancer.

Morning main lecture I

Shepherd Johnson Deng Mayik served the message, "You are the Christ" in Arabic. Dr. Oyo Moses translated it into English. Both of them are from S. Sudan. He used to hold strong hatred against his father who abandoned the family. Through the deep Bible study one day the word about the vine and branch especially the word that says the branch that is not fruitful will be cut off hit him. He realized that the long held hatred against his father made him unfruitful. Then one day as he listened to the message of Jesus the Christ suffering on a tree and praying, "Father forgive them", he deeply repented. He knelt down and asked God for forgiveness. Then joy filled his heart. He then fully committed himself to the Savior and began to invite students from college campus (Malakal UBF). He is now feeding 6 sheep. God also blessed him to marry the most beautiful woman (named Regina) last May. Dr. Oyo works as the professor at the Upper Nile University in S. Sudan.

Afternoon program consisted of testimony writing and sharing. Then after the dinner we had an evening program. Missionary John Park of New Jersey and Brother Mamdou Saleh (Egpyt) offered the representative prayer. Shepherd Mamdou prayed in Arabic. Shepherd Patrick Ogwang presided the meeting. He reminded us of what Missionary Mark Yoon had asked in 2007, "Why are we here?" Answer: to see the vision of God. So Patrick asked, "Why are we here?" Answer: to see the vision of God, that is, to be Jesus' witnesses.

Brother Juma Fuchingo (Kenya) shared a testimony. He has 6 brothers and five sisters. His father was a drunkard who turned to be a pastor. He studied at the University of Nairobi, studying environmental science. He came to UBF chasing after women. He always was double minded. Through Elijah's challenge, "How long shall you linger between two opinions? If Jehovah is God, follow him, if Baal is God follow him", he decided to follow Jesus. Last December he established a house church with Janet. After becoming a shepherd, he fed sheep. But sheep broke promises. Through this he learned that life as a shepherd is not easy. He learned that he needed to learn from Jesus and then he can be a good shepherd after Jesus' example.

Lillian Ogwang: Patrick's wife
She grew up in a believing family. At 12 she got baptized. But growing up she could not overcome her sinful desires such as envy. She had to attend a Muslim school. At age 14 she deeply accepted Jesus. She excelled at school. Throughout her campus life she used to attend Navigator ministry where she met Patrick Ogwang. Patrick says she is like Job who was righteous, yet suffered from the hidden pride. She suffered from miscarriage twice. She is a pediatrician. She was challenged to feed sheep. Now she feeds six sheep. She testified that the Lord is good.

Peter Angelo (S. Sudan) born 1970 at Malakal S.Sudan. He was sick (paralysis in his left lag). He suffered from epileptic attacks. Shepherd Oyo Moses kept inviting him to Bible study while he was attending the university at Juba. He did not have money to attend the Bible study. So by faith he took a bus. Then each time he did that mysteriously somebody already paid the money. In 1999 Easter Bible conference he was established as a shepherd. In 2000 he became a main speaker. He was fearful. But he challenged by faith. Then even Missionary Andrew was surprised by the power of the message. He invited Padet Deng to Bible studies. Now Padet Deng is a full time shepherd. In 2003 during the sunday worship he fell unconscious due to bleeding in his brain, and then he went into a coma state. When he woke up, doctors were surprised and said, "It is a miracle." Dr. Ben To of Chicago offered much money for his treatment through a Neurosurgeon in Cairo. Now he fully recovered from the disease. He got a job at Malakal at a taxation office as an inspector. Shepherd Oliver Laku translated Peter's Arabic Testimony into English.

We were asked not to feed monkeys, for they will come and grab your food, if you do. We were asked not to move around after midnight, for they let the dogs run around to bite the wanderers.

Dr. John Jun received calls from the U.S. for they were worried about a special virus called "Ebola" raging in Uganda. He warned me not to shake hands for once you contract this virus, the mortality rate is 50:50; if you do not get well in two weeks you will die.

Saturday morning program began at 6:30 a.m. with Uganda Singspiration Team leading the worship in song. Shepherdess Janet Cherotich offered prayer before the message.

The messenger for the morning devotion was Shepherd Otieno Cherotich (Kenya) based on Romans 6, entitled "By no means" (Romans 6:2)

He said if we are true christians we should never never never should sin. True Christians have died to sin. Yet, many say, "Where sin increased grace increased all the more", and abusing this passage they sin more to let the grace increase all the more. But Paul says since we have been united with Jesus in death we also have been raised with Christ to live a new life. He used to live as a nominal Christian. He committed fornication with a sister in the fellowship for more than 3 years. He became like a dog returning to sin. Due to this sin he felt filthy as a shepherd. He secretly wanted to run away. And he kept continue to sin. He decided to offer his body as an instrument of righteousness. He was asked to join a common life with students seven years younger than he. He decided to obey.

After the breakfast, there was a group Bible study on Acts 1:1-11. The main message was preceded by a short skit, and a special song from among the Uganda UBF Choir.

Shepherd Steven Sebbale (Uganda) served the main lecture on Acts 1:1-11. He is a shepherd of Makarere University. He works at the Ugandan Institute of Science and Technology. He has been feeding sheep, only to realize they did not grow up as quickly as they should. His sheep whom he used to help for the last four years asked him to pay for the conf. registration fee, although his sheep has a good job as an engineer. His heart was broken.

Africa, Uganda in particular, has many problems like Muslim onslaught or diseases like ebola virus raging. After all history of Africa is the history of pain, sufferings, and pain. But we are to focus on being Jesus' witnesses to all nations. God's work begins with one man like Agabe Moses, a missionary to Rwanda. They pray for pioneering 34 Universities in Uganda. They also pray for sending witnesses to Samaria which is Muslim area. To do so, they need martyrdom spirit like Dr. Oyo Moses who fearlessly invited sheep in Egypt.

John 3:3 hit Steven hard. Then he gave himself to the Lord, and said, "You are the Christ." He is feeding 12 junior shepherds and takes care of Jire fellowship. He once got hijacked by a bandit as he and his company moved to Kenya to attend a conf. At that time he thought he would die. The face of his wife and two kids flashed in his mind. But by God's grace he was saved unharmed. Since then he prayed to be a strong shepherd.

World Mission Night

Egypt (Shep. Oyor Moses) - Seek God and work wholeheartedly. God changed a drunkard to a missionary. He was born in S. Sudan. He hated Muslims. In his fourth year at Juba Univ. He used to attend worldly parties. He tried to run away. He did run away. But his shepherd invited him to the Bible study. His shepherd also invited him to eating fellowship. He served me with chicken. He wanted to live a different life, but did not know how. Rev. 3:20 changed his life. He received Jesus on Nov. 15, 2007. He committed to the worship. Soon he became a shepherd. Then along with Dr. Luke Lim and Joseph Chung he visited Kigali Rwanda. At the beginning of 2011 he heard the voice go to Rwanda and after some training on Feb. 24, 2011 at 11:00 he was sent to Rwanda. Rwanda is a peaceful country run by a faithful president, a corruption free nation. They used to speak French but lately the official language became English. Kigali is the capital city. In March 2994 there was a genocide of one million death. He is trying to fish students on campus. He met many sheep: Arthur, David, Gastone, John, etc. They keep coming to Bible studies. He begins with fasting and prayer. He works as the presider, messenger, all by himself on every Sunday. In order not to fall into sin, he chose not to fish girl students. Coworkers in Rwanda sends him money. He looks for a permanent job.
Sudan and Juba Mission Report by Shepherd Padet Deng. Romans 8:28 He was born 1978. His father was a Muslim and his mother a Christian. In 1999 at BlueNile Univ. he began to study with Philip Angelo. Shep. Peter kept urging him to come to Bible study. In 2001 Andrew gave him three months of testimony writing training. in 2002 he was anointed as a shepherd. Most of his neighbors were Muslims. He had a fear. He could not help Muslim neighbors. Through Acts study he could study the Bible with Muslims. At 2006 he accepted the world mission command. He works full time selling medicine and kept receiving Sunday worship message writing. In 2007 he married Pibi. In 2009 he became the director of Sudan UBF. He gave up two good jobs to receive training in UBF. So he kept complaining why God demanded him so much. He read Mother Barry's message which said many want to know first and decide but she said we need to decide first and then understand. Then when Andrew asked whether he could quit a job and be a director of Sudan UBF. In 2010 he became the director. That year God gave him a good government job. He was worried how he could feed sheep for leaders moved to S. Sudan. N. Sudan leaders ruled with Sharia Law. He overcame and accepted Shepherd Daniel Lee's new year message, "If I perish, I perish." He decided to keep the mission at Khartoum saying, "If I perish, I perish." After serving the directorship for two years. God raised 6 new leaders. In 2011 S. Sudan became independent from Sudan. After the session all S. Sudan students were asked to move to S. Sudan. Then he accepted Roman 8:28 and got a job at a petroleum company in S. Sudan and obey Missionary Andrew's direction to move to Juba of S. Sudan and pioneer Juba University. Several shepherds joined. He looks for a house near the campus. Many S. Introduction of the participants:

Sunday Morning (August 5, 2012)

Morning Devotion Message by Julius Ecuru (Uganda, Chiambogo) Luke 23:33-38

He testified that Jesus himself set the perfect example of forgiving sinners of their sins. Likewise as Jesus' witness we must forgive one another. He met Dr. Samuel Yoo in 1994. When he was a boy, he saw a witch doctor. The doctor gazed at him and said, "Wear this charm. Otherwise you will die very soon." So he always carried the charm. But his friend took it away. But through Jesus he overcame fear. Then he thought the cross in UBF was too much, so he ran away. But like a prodigal son he came back. In 2007 he deeply repented at the Spring Conf. He then raised Ronald as a shepherd. Since then he lives as a campus shepherd. He is now working as a scientist at the National Council of Science and Technology.

After breakfast we studied in groups Acts 14:1-28.

The main message was preceded by a praise team leading songs in worship and a short skit, "The Spirit of Witnessing" (Kenya UBF)

Kenya UBF also put together a special song (called road to heaven, I think.)

Shepherd Kevin Namudeche (Kenya) served the Sunday Message on Acts 14. In his passage he said "A witness of Jesus Christ should never, never, seek any credit for him, but give honor to Jesus Christ and Jesus alone!" His wife says he has a good voice. As the presider at the Kenya Sunday worship, he wanted more and more people appreciate his service. But he repented. He also testified that like Peter we too must be ready to suffer physical pain as well. He also asked the congregation, "My fellow brethren! Will you be willing to carry out the mission even after our missionaries leave?" Three times he asked, "My dear African shepherds! After the conference, I pray that all of us suffer many sufferings and hardships for Jesus!" Then the congregation said Amen! loud. It was a big struggle for him to self-support without a job, still fish students on campus, for three years. Then God gave him a good job and family. Then he had the desire to settle down in Kenya. But now he repented and prayed to pioneer a new college campus. Then he prayed to go out as a missionary.

Closing Message by: Dr. Abraham Kim

He shared three thanks topics: salvation from his sins from 36 years ago; his wife; and the call to live as a UBF shepherd.

Do you want to be a good witness of Jesus? Do you want to be a fruitful witness of Jesus? In Ephesus he changed the strategy. He took disciples and focused on them. He devoted to studying and teaching the word of God to key disciples for 2 years. And the fruit was amazing.

To be witness of Jesus Christ, we must have God's word in our heart. So we need to study the Bible with all of our hearts. The Holy Spirit worked through his teaching and preaching. The next thing we need to do is to become a good shepherd with great humility and tears. He served the Lord, not his own dream or ambition. He shepherded one to one. Each person is different, and he visited them house to house, praying for them, and serving them with many tears! He prayed Christ be formed in them. The Word of the Lord grew in power. Many repented. Let us study and teach the word in season and out of season. This gave him deep conviction to pioneer Rome also.
